The British Shorthair is the cat equivalent of a well-made armchair: solid, unhurried, and quietly present in every room of the house. Bred from the working cats of Roman Britain and refined over the 19th century, today's BSH is prized for a dense double coat, a broad face, and a temperament that asks very little of you — and gives a great deal back.

Temperament

BSH cats are famously easy-going. They are affectionate without being clingy, playful without being frantic, and content to supervise your day from a sunny patch of floor rather than demand to be carried everywhere. This makes them an excellent fit for working households, families with children, and first-time cat owners.

A common misconception is that they love being held. Most BSH prefer to sit beside you rather than on you — affection on their own terms is part of the charm.

Coat & grooming

The signature plush coat has no undercoat-to-topcoat length variation, which gives it that crisp, teddy-bear density. A weekly brush keeps it healthy; during seasonal moults (spring and autumn) twice-weekly is wise. They are not a high-maintenance grooming breed, but the coat does shed.

Health & longevity

A well-bred BSH from DNA-tested parents typically lives 14–20 years. The two conditions responsible breeders screen for are HCM (a heart condition) and PKD (a kidney condition). Every Meowtelier parent is screened for both — which is why we talk about testing parents, not just kittens.
