British Longhair: the BSH in a softer coat

The British Longhair (BLH) shares everything that makes the Shorthair beloved — the round face, the sweet copper eyes, the unbothered temperament — and adds a soft, semi-long coat that falls in gentle waves rather than the BSH's crisp plush. They are, in essence, the same cat in a more romantic silhouette.

Where it comes from

The longhair gene appears naturally within British Shorthair lines, historically introduced through Persian outcrossing. A BLH can be born in a BSH litter; deliberate BLH breeding simply selects for that flowing coat while preserving the British type and temperament.

Grooming reality

This is the main difference you will feel day to day. The longer coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent matting, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the trousers. It is not as demanding as a Persian, but it is more than a Shorthair. Budget ten minutes, a few times a week.

Temperament

Identical to the BSH in the ways that matter: calm, affectionate, undemanding, good with children and other pets. If you love the British personality but are drawn to a softer, fluffier look — and you don't mind the brush — the BLH is your cat.

  • Same gentle British temperament as the Shorthair
  • Semi-long coat needs brushing 2–3× per week
  • Born from the same lines; screened for the same conditions
  • A beautiful middle ground between Shorthair and Persian
